Why I became a Nutritional Therapist
I qualified as a nutritional therapist to try and make a difference to people’s lives.
I’ve benefited massively from my learning curve and want to help you avoid (or rectify) the mistakes with food that I was making.
The impact of nutrition on my own health
I knew from an early age that what I consumed impacted my health. I was diagnosed with Asthma and also suffered with ear and throat infections and Urticaria (nettle rash).
Later in life I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, and hypothyroidism. So there was a lot to sort out.
A few years back, I experienced another bout of urticaria alongside battling depression. It was 18 months of hell. My skin was burning, I couldn’t wear certain clothes. Some mornings my eyes would be so swollen I could hardly see.
I felt hideous, and embarrassed. I was on was a concoction of anti-histamines – taking them six times a day just so that I could manage. I would wake up most nights as the itching and the heat from my skin was unbearable. The only relief was a cold shower to calm the reaction down.
A complex relationship with food
My eating habits weren’t great. Food for me was just fuel and cooking for myself and a fussy child wasn’t that enjoyable.
I explained to my Consultant Dermatologist that I was prepared to do an elimination diet to get to the bottom of it but she didn’t think it would resolve the problem. I really didn’t understand why.
An elimination diet had worked in the past to help find the culprit food. Her reasoning was allergies and intolerances change and mutate, so the next time there was a flare up I could be chasing a different cause.
I felt perplexed and disheartened that the only way out of this was a concoction of medication. And yet I was handed a leaflet of salicylates foods to avoid, go figure.
Creating new nutritional habits
All of this led me on a journey of discovery to find the root cause of what was going on with my body.
I needed more knowledge, so I enrolled at the College of Naturopathic Medicine to study nutritional therapy.
A body in balance through nutritional therapy
I now have a deeper knowledge of the importance of keeping my body in balance.
I now understand how stress has an impact, as do the foods we eat (and when we eat them). I also have greater insight into the importance of movement and keeping our bodies hydrated. Not to mention sleep. Each one of these factors have a direct impact on our health.
Some days stresses have taken over and I’ve just eaten meal for fuel. Nobody’s perfect, but I know there’s a better way. Nowadays, if I suffer a flare up I know how to manage it and have strategies to implement.
Sharing my knowledge and helping others
Deborah was amazing. I felt so listened too and normal for my struggles and failed previous attempts at making improvements. – Paige
