Why I became a Nutritional Therapist

From an early age, I became aware of how what I ate affected my health

I was diagnosed with asthma and experienced recurring ear and throat infections, as well as urticaria (nettle rash).

Years later, I went through a particularly difficult 18 months when the urticaria returned alongside depression. My skin would burn and itch, my eyes could become extremely swollen, and I relied heavily on antihistamines simply to manage my symptoms.

I felt hideous, and embarrassed

I was on was a concoction of anti-histamines – taking them six times a day just so that I could manage.  I would wake up most nights as the itching and the heat from my skin was unbearable. The only relief was a cold shower to calm the reaction down.

I wanted to understand why this was happening, rather than just manage the symptoms.

At the time, my relationship with food wasn’t particularly positive

Food was often just fuel, and cooking for myself and a fussy child wasn’t always enjoyable. But my health challenges prompted me to look more closely at nutrition and the wider factors that influence our wellbeing.

That curiosity led me to study Nutritional Therapy at the College of Naturopathic Medicine

Today, I have a much deeper understanding of how nutrition, stress, movement, hydration and sleep can all contribute to our overall health and wellbeing.

I’m certainly not perfect

There are still days when life takes over and food becomes simply fuel!

But I now feel better equipped to recognise what my body needs and have strategies I can turn to when things feel out of balance.

Lived experience

My own experience is ultimately what inspired me to become a Nutritional Therapist and to help others better understand and support their own health.
